Julija Primic, the daughter of a wealthy mercantile family, was the object of the love of France Preseren, who later became Slovenia’s national poet. However, her parents considered a “poor poet” to be unsuitable for their daughter who they intended would be married to a wealthy aristocratic merchant.
After her marriage, France Preseren entered into a relationship with another woman but did not marry and after the death of two of his children and the fostering of his third child the relationship ended. Preseren turned to drink and attempted suicide at least twice, finally dying of cirrhosis of the liver sixteen years after meeting Julija. Julija lived another fifteen years, dying at the age of forty eight, the same age as Preseren when he died..
The sculpture of Julija shows her looking out the window directly in the line of sight of France Preseren’s statue in Preseren Square, Lubuljana, Slovenia
