Bo-Kaap, situated on Signal Hill, was established by freed slaves who had been brought from south East Asia – Madagascar, India, Sri Lanka, Malaysia and Indonesia – by the Dutch. They became known as Cape Malay. They were predominantly of the Muslim faith and the area is still 90% Muslim – a throwback to the Apartheid era. The first official mosque in South Africa, Auwal, was built here in 1797.

We spent too short a time in Cape Town. It is obviously a city of great variety. This area is memorable for its colour and general atmosphere.
