Cologne City Hall is the oldest city hall with a documented history spanning some 900 years. It consists of several structures added in varying architectural styles including then14th century hall, 15th , 16th century loggia and cloister and 20th century Modern Movement style atrium.

It is located on the site of the former Roman Praetorium which, until the year 476, was the seat of the Roman Governor of Germania. The 61 metre tall tower was commissioned by the Cologne guilds on 19 August, 1406 and was built between 1407 1414. It consists of 5 Stories and a cellar. Although heavily damaged during World War 11 it was completely restored, including the figures. The carillon is played by the tower bells 4 times a day.
