Artist's Description

Ink sketch and watercolour on a sketch pad

Turnips (Brassica rapa subsp. rapa)
Brassica rapa, field mustard, is an herbaceous annual or biennial species in the Brassicaceae (the cabbage or mustard family). The species is thought to have originated in Europe, with many varieties developed in Asia, but its numerous varieties are now widely cultivated commercially and in home gardens in temperate and north temperate regions throughout the world.
Do you know how to cook a turnip? Most people don’t, I didn’t. They’re one of those intimidating vegetables that one is not quite sure what to do with. But once you know how, it’s easy as pie! You can have them boiled or steamed, mashed or puréed, sautéed or stewed and with vegan-ism being a growing life-style, the internet is full of scrumptious recipes. Raw Turnips can also be cut into sticks for use with dips or grated and used in salads or coleslaws.
