Giraffes (Giraffa camelopardalis) are fairly social animals and get together in herds from time to time. However, there is no group bonding. Youngsters stay with a few adult females and the males are nomadic and move between groups of females. Because Giraffes do not have a fixed breeding season, males are always wandering in search of receptive females.
At approx 5m tall, a female weighs in at 800kg and a male at 1,200kg. Giraffes are native to Africa and can be found in a range that extends from Chad in Central Africa to South Africa. They occur mainly in arid regions such as savannas, grasslands, and open woodlands. Giraffes no longer survive in most of western Africa except for a small remnant population located in Niger.
A giraffe came by the acacia tree
Stopped to gaze and talk to me.
For he was very lean and tall
A pillar, a column, a walking wall.
This angular figure, graceful and wise
Of astounding vision and cool clear eyes
Watched the sun rise, then watched it set
Looked down on me and seemed to forget
That I was as much a part of this scene
As the sun in the sky, the oak in the green.
