Evening in Paris

If you are under a certain age
this phrase will mean a flight to
the capital of France
Montmartre perhaps
that tower thing
terraces and a museum

(any museum will do – after all, it’s France)

If not, you will only see gold flecks
on deep blue glass
flasks in various shapes
and you will only sense an old scent

(call it the war-time sort – or shortly thereafter)

If you are the author, you see and sense and
recall gold-on-blue
one pair of hands inside another
a face with a slipping gleam
feigning not knowing yet
so certain of the gift

(it was not about France at all – and never about Paris)

It was about how the giver had been to Normandy
and returned
with the scent of survival
