Artist's Description

Crocodile Flathead, Cymbacephalus beauforti
14 inches long
Peleliu, Palau

This is a closeup of the eye of this well camouflaged fish. Often the eyes are the most visible part of creatures which are otherwise well hidden, so these fish hide their eyes with fleshy growths called lappets. The flathead depends on his camouflage so much that he will not move even when a camera is put a couple of inches away from his face.

Shot with a Canon 7D camera and 100mm f/2.8L macro lens in an Aquatica housing with dual Ikelite DS-125 strobes.
