Artist's Description

The Great Bustard, Otis tarda, is a member of the bustard family Otidae, and the only member of the genus Otis. The nominate form tarda breeds in southern and central Europe and western Russia.

One of the most spectacular birds on the planet, the Great Bustard, has successfully bred in the UK for only the second time since 1832. Until 2009 this magnificent bird was extinct in Britain. Now once more the skies over Wiltshire are home to this endangered species. Two years of successful breeding and an increasing number of nests indicate that last year was no fluke and that the Great Bustard is well on its way to being established once more in the Uk
