Gyotaku is special to me because it honours the memory of the fish and the morning it was caught.
I first travelled to Japan in 2003. This is when I saw gyotaku art for the first time. I was in a ramen house ordering lunch in Takamatsu, when I saw an old, dusty print of an octopus, perched high up the wall. I can still remember the beauty and simplicity of the creature swimming in an imaginary ocean above the busy chefs cooking noodles below.
