Artist's Description

This Cottage was built in 1755, Originally built in Great Ayton, Yorkshire, England, it was later transported and reassembled in Melbourne in 1934. This was actually his parents home, James and Grace Cook.

When the cottage went up for sale in 1933, Sir Russell Grimwade bought the Cottage for 800 pounds as a gift to the Victorian public. An architectural firm supervised its dismantling and later re-construction. The Cottage was taken apart brick by brick in England (can you believe it !) and packed into 253 cases and 40 barrels. Every piece was identified and numbered, and significant stones were individually encased in concrete.
