I left Lower Sabie restcamp early on a very wet and misty morning. It rained the previous night and I was on a mission that day to find cheetah’s, mission impossible, that was what I said to myself, but I was determined to do my best!
After, I think, an two hour drive, trying various turn offs and gravel roads, I arrived at a T-junction,I stopped, wasn’t sure which way to go from there, when I suddenly noticed a lioness right in front of me, lying, just visable in dense bush, about 30 metres away from where I stopped..
I drove closer and parked my car on the other side of the road, closest to the lioness. After watching her for a while I noticed two little cubs coming out of the bush running towards her.
I suddenly heard a Hyaena call, the mother scrambled to the bush with her babies. Through the lenz of my camera, I slowly moved accross the bush to try and find her, nothing…. as I moved further and further to the right from where she vanished, to see if I can see the Hyaena, my heart bounched in my throat! Through the lenz of my camera I spotted a cheetah, sitting up straight, facing the direction that the Hyaena call came from! A movement further to the right caught my eye and I spotted a second cheetah! This was just to much to take in at that moment… lions, two cheetah’s and a hyaena close-by? My heart was pounding in my throat with excitement… was this really my lucky day? Right place at the right moment? At first I did not know what to do! Should I stay, or must I move my car closer to the Cheetah’s? At that moment I noticed the Cheetah in front of me cautiously getting up and stalking towards the road where I was parked. I noticed the second Cheetah also moving towards the road and decided that it was time to make my move! I slowly moved forward with both the cheetah’s next to me in the tall grass! As I moved forward on the road close to them, I noticed that my presence, or rather the moving vehicle did not worry them at all! They suddenly changed direction and moved towards the road where I was, I slowed down and they both appeared in the road right in front of me! I stopped and noticed them both, very cautious and alert, making their way to a puddle of water that was still there from the previous nights rain, I then realised that they must have been on their way to drink water from a little stream of water that was flowing right behind the bush where the lioness was with her cups.
I was amazed at the way one of them was always on the watch while the other was drinking and there was, most of the time, that contact by touching each other.
From there, all these amazing captures that I just must share….! Cheetah behaviour at it’s best! Hope you enjoy as much as I did!
