Artist's Description

Captured location: Mapungubwe National Park and World Heritage Site, Limpopo Province, SOUTH AFRICA.
NYALA TREEXanthocercis zambesiaca (Njalaboom)

Large rounded evergreen tree to 30m; along flood plains at low altitiudes, usually on alluvial soils.
Main stem: bark dark grey; branches slender and drooping.
Leaves: compound (imparipinnate); drooping; 3 – 7 pairs of sub-opposite leaflets; leaflets to 55 × 20 mm; shiny dark green above, paler below; apex usually notched; leaf axis velvety.
*Flowers
; in hanging sprays to 100mm long; creamy-white, pea-like, fragrant (Sept – Oct)
Fruit; Large reddish-brown berries, to 25 × 17mm (Nov – june).
Distribution: from Swaziland northwards throughout Maphumalanga and Limpopo Province, into south-central Africa.
General Fruits edible, occasionally first burried for a few weeks and made into porridge or dried meal
