unfinished story (poem)

once upon a time
a boy met a girl
and a girl met a boy
and they fell in love
as the story usually goes
but nothing came off it
- fell apart, it just did
too many reasons to recall
simply went the way some stories do
yet it lingers
tendrils of perhaps and maybe
and if and when
sneak through the days
when no one is looking
little leaves growing
here and there
reaching for the light
but never quite succeeding
just draining the heart’s life
they’re leeching off
an everyday vampire
ivy for the soul
taking bits here and there
and turning them into possibilities
and then falling in on itself
like a house of cards
like the pack of lies it really is
because the moral of the story is
an unfinished story is
an unending story
it goes on forever
teasing you with all the
missed opportunities
holding on to you
with its tiny claws
digging deep
like a parasite
mocking
like the magpie in the tree
always a step away
always out of reach
always unfinished
never ending
never done
never.

Artist's Description

Now and again the story of my first love comes up again in a dream. It’s, oh so many years ago, but still sometimes I remember it. Do you have a love like that?
