just because

dream tears drying on my cheeks
not the downy softness of yesteryear
but the lined map of a life lived
with all the hills and troughs
with all the pain and laughter

and just because
there are no scars on the outside
doesn’t mean it doesn’t hurt on the inside

and just because
my lips are smiling
doesn’t mean I am not reeling

and just because
I am not talking
doesn’t mean I won’t be walking

life takes you to some strange places
in the daylight and at night
when you’re not careful and aware
it takes you by the hand and
it shows your own face in the mirror

and just because
I won’t tell
doesn’t mean it doesn’t show

and just because
I am not screaming
doesn’t mean I am not mad

and just because
promises are broken
doesn’t mean there won’t be an account

sometimes things aren’t easy
they’re not clear cut
and straight ahead
but twisty and full of dead ends
for no good reason, just because

and just because
I am still here
doesn’t mean I am not already gone

and just because
my heart is still beating
doesn’t mean I am breathing

and just because
is nothing but a clever way
to make you believe a lie.
