Pompeii or the Landscape of My Heart

The colourful display at the entrance
veils the dark secrets
of the compound
of pain and golden light
layered in ash and dust.

Petrified memories
excavated and on show
for gruesome excitement and titillation,
distilled tears of pain,
a spectre still lingering.

Hidden rays of sunlight
amongst the scars of scattered ruins
and shattered dreams,
ox blood red and sky blue gold
treasures for those who see.

Manifestos, principles and views
scrawled on crumbling walls,
telling of history repeating
of people changing
whilst staying the same.

Dusty greens and wild flowers
struggling in arid soil,
at dusk an amphitheatre ringing
with golden notes of a flute
played in memory of what once was.

Artist's Description

I recently happened upon an image of a mural in Pompeii and it brought back memories of a visit to Pompeii a long, long time ago.

The highlight of the visit was one of my class mates playing his flute in one of the remaining small amphitheatres.

One day I’ll go back…
