The whole mermaid thing was inspired by t-fourlee’s poem Ocean Peace
I’ve always loved the sea and water and this is my take on a mermaid. I wanted to do something dreamy that showed the yearning for the sea and living in the sea rather than something cute and twee.
This is the poem to accompany the image, Mermaid
Mermaid
Oh, to be a mermaid
and live deep beneath
the sparkling water
in the inky depths
of Poseidon’s kingdom
dimly lit only by the
flash and glimmer of
silent glowing fish.
Oh, to be a mermaid
subject only to
Thetis’ song
weaving through the darkness
heart beating to the waves’ crescendo
and the ebb and flow
of the tides following
the moon maid’s gentle call.
Oh, to be a mermaid
to come up for air
after a storm
rescue a drowning sailor
with a cold wet kiss
drag him to dry land
to dream of beautiful maidens
with long glistening tails.
Oh, to be a mermaid
to sit upon a rock
near the sea shore
with coral combs
and pearls in
long lustrous locks
to spin a web of song
to entice a prince or two.
Oh, to be a mermaid
what fun I could have
swim with the dolphins
sung to sleep by the whale’s song
reminisce with a turtle
grow a midnight garden
full of sea anemones
and treasures lost and found.
Oh, to be a mermaid
to grow a long shiny tail
and gills to breathe the water
sing the song of tides
be one with all that salty brine
alas it’s not to be
I am stranded here on land
with two legs and no flippers.
