Artist's Description

Wide angle panorama incorporating (with difficulty) seven wide angle images. These were taken at very low tide out along the sea’s edge in front of the cliffs that reach from the Nuns’ to the Ladies beaches of Ballybunion, Kerry, Ireland. What a truly beautiful sight this view of these cliffs and caves was, a first for me and a rare opportunity!

These cliffs are not accessible usually except at very low tide and we actually managed the legendary walk from the Nuns’ Strand to the Ladies Strand – we got wet but we did it. Fantastic. These caves were amazing to see and we could wade through one to another with difficulty. The large dark cave on the left is the ground opening of the ‘Nine Daughters’ Hole’ – a blow hole that you can see down through to the sea below from on top of the cliff. We could just reach the edge of this cave and look up towards the sky through the cave.

Legend has it that a Chief in Ballybunion discovered that one of his daughters had become betrothed to a rival chief from further along the shore. To discover which daughter it was, he threw the engagement ring into the hole to see which daughter would dive in to try to retrieve it! All nine daughters dived in and died.

Canon EOS 5D Mk II Lens:EF17-40mm f/4L USM @ 17mm.
