Artist's Description

My dad and his brothers were brought up in a tent on Hokio Beach, half way between Wellington and Levin. There were three brothers and one real sister who drowned in the sea as a youngester. My kuia or grandmother wanted the boys to be brought up in a white mans world, they spoke no maori, they were all told to get an educaiton and all three went on to become Headmasters and Teachers of various schools in NZ and the UK. My father was the first Maori to go abroad to teach in the UK on 1965 on a Teachers Exchange, a year that would eventually lead to my parents demise but a year that would end up giving me my yearn for travel. This photo was of Dad and his brother when they were at Training College in Wellington together.
