Artist's Description

Calla lilies collage with my photos manipulated with Photoshop

  • Featured on Portugal Group and All Glorious Lilies Group

This year winter was very cold and seems endless, but the first calas appearing in the gardens reminded us that spring is coming.

  • The calla lily originates from the southern parts of Africa, namely South Africa up to the country Malawi, which is positioned in alignment with
the northern border of the African island Madagascar
  • The flower became even more popular with artists after Freud provided a
sexual interpretation of its form that added new levels of meaning to
    depictions of it.
  • The calla lily also became a very popular motif for painters as the
form and colours were extremely appealing to the eye of the beholder.
It has often been used in many paintings, and is visible in many of Diego
Rivera’s works of art and Georgia O’Keeffe who depicted the flower so many times and in such provocative ways, that by the early 1930’s she became known as “the lady of the lilies.”
