Artist's Description

In the land that saw the sun before the rest,
A flower dispersed seeds that flew to the west.
In the land that celebrated fortune in red,
Stardust fell from the sky as the day fled.
The wind carried some of the sparkling sand,
And made contact with a seed in a faraway land.

Diptych composite using two self portraits and supplementary background images.

I don’t usually do this sort of thing so I hope you enjoy. It is my first time showing my whole face this close-up in my own portfolio. As I mentioned a couple of times lately, I’m going through a transitional period now, striving to do the things I want to do and pursuing more creative projects. I may also play around more with mediums, subjects and styles I don’t use often.

See the original self-portraits here

My mother is Japanese and my father is Chinese. The kimono I wear on the left is called a yukata and is commonly worn during summer festivities. I bought that yukata while visiting Japan last year. The Chinese dress I wear on my right is one my father bought for me in Shanghai over eight years ago… and it got bigger!

The Japanese flag is white with a red circle to represent the rising sun while the Chinese flag is red with a moon and star, hence my choice of day and night in the backgrounds. The flowers in front of me on my Japanese side were made by my grandmother; needless to say I got my art from my mother. From my dad I got my background in math (although I’ve never actually used an abacus before).

I took both photos yesterday, and have been playing in Photoshop today (hence my lack of commenting today; I’ll start catching up). The gold frame I added in later some time after thinking the work lacked something. Critique and feedback is welcome (as long as it doesn’t involve re-taking myself) and thanks for looking :)
