Along with the metro, bus, tramvie, trolleybus and marshrootka systems that this northern city has well in place; new lines of transportation open up in late May every year once the canals and rivers thaw. St. Petersburg is known as the Venice of the North. Water taxis that move along these lines have been modeled after those in Venice, called vaporettos.
