Where I Am From

I am from open windows, not open minds
I am from tear stained cheeks,
Stained glass windows, and grass stains.
I am from old twin oaks and red brick roads,
I’m from airplanes, salty bean soup, and farming
I’m from rebels, and pain,
And piecing life back together.
I’m from tell-me-toos and let-me-leaves.
I’m from “whose turn is it for the dishes?”
And long waits for the shower.
I am from letting go and holding on,
From homemade donuts and Saturday bread.
I’m from Little Boy Blue and Mary’s Lamb,
From broken limbs (trees and appendages)
And losing jobs.
I’m from weddings and funerals and people.
Long lines in the lineage of love
Shade me in silver shadows.
