Artist's Description

The Canadians have their maple leaf: well, we antipodeans have the mighty gumleaf. This one is typical of the Sydney area.

I started painting these leaves isolated from their environment in 1982 when on a camping trip to an isolated national park in Victoria, near the coast at Thurra River. I had been out painting sand dunes all day and stopped to pick up and examine a gumleaf on the bush track back to the tent. All the colours of my palette were there, along with the forms of the trees and best of all was the calligraphy formed by the work of insects and parasites.

There are trillions upon trillions of gumleaves in Australia, they are everywhere. People walk over them all day and never think about it. That’s why I decided to present them like specimens in a museum. To say: Take a closer look.
