Artist's Description

The Merchant Navy’s flag called The Red Ensign of sometimes fondly called The Red Duster. The flag originated in the early 1600’s and was flown by the Royal Navy and was later adopted specifically by British merchantmen to be flown as the civil ensign of the British merchant fleet.

It is seen here attached to the stern of an Ullswater steamer that takes passengers on trips up and down one of Cumbria’s most beautiful lakes.
