Formerly called Beach stone Curlew. Generally called Curlew they are very interesting birds. Voice: Repeated loud mournful wailing ‘wee loo’, usually at night and sounds quite blood curdling on quiet nights when they are very close by. This beautifully marked bird had taken up residence in the garden of an Apartment where we were staying on Magnetic Island off Townsville
east coast Queensland.
I loved the soft tones of blue on his head feathers, the blue & grey markings in the wings & tail, The strong blue beak & feet, grey/off white legs, buff under feathers, & rufous under-tail, 55cm tall, They have a stiff stance, skulking habits and you can literally nearly fall over them because they stand or sit in the shadows of bushes, as I nearly did in the back garden during the day. Mainly active at night. They can just choose a spot to stand even by a roadside and stay there for hours during the day.
