Artist's Description

This 2nd wing mirrors the 1st wing, and was comp. in 1900. A fascinating first Public Works Prison 1886-1903 for convicts and felons. In 1915 it became an Enemy Alien Internment camp for Germans living in Australia because of the war with Germany. It was very overcrowded and most of the people interned were hard working, and academics with family’s. The men lived here under very hard conditions, until 1918. It was built of exceptionally hard local granite, and created many construction problems. The construction of the seawall by prison labour, and object of the public works was never completed. Built at Laggers, Point South West Rocks, N.S.W. Australia.
