The Hot Seat

The Hot Seat

I sat there as he took attendance. He looked and searched the room for empty seats. The clock struck 2:00PM and class began.

“In the last hour we discussed…”, he gave a synopsis of our previous sitting with of course the omission of who was on the hot seat and how they burned. “And now we turn our attention to a discussion of today’s case”. I thought, as I am sure my classmates thought, “who will be next?”

“Ahh, let’s see, Miss Jones, tell us what’s going on in the case. Who are our defendants, plaintiffs, cause of action, and give us the procedural posture.” Poor Miss Jones. I hope she read the case. I hope for her sake, for our sake, for her co-counsel’s sake that she prepared her focus questions.

Hesitation.

Silence.

“Well, at least for some guidance, tell us the relevant facts of the case.” He attempted to assist, yet at the same time achieve the administration of the “prepared Civ. Pro. Student?” test.

She failed.

Burned there.
On the hot seat.

Silence.

Hesitation.

Sighs in the room from several who would have passed the same test if it were given to them. Don’t they learn? Why subject yourself to such humiliation?

The hot seat is inevitable, but failure is not.

Prepare.
