Artist's Description

Carlisle Cathedral, taken on West Walls, Carlisle.

Carlisle Cathedral is an Old English Cathedral, founded in 1122 (possibly on the site of an earlier church) as an Augustinian priory and became a Cathedral in 1133. The Cathedral, built with local red sandstone has been restored several times over the years.
The flowing decorative gothic East Window is the largest and most complex of its style in England at 51 feet high and 26 feet wide.
The Carlisle Cathedral Choir dates back to 1133, the earliest documented organ being 1571.
During the English Civil War the Scottish army demolished part of the nave to reinforce the city walls and Carlisle Castle.
Under care of English Heritage.
