Artist's Description

Sepia edit of Carlisle Castle.

Carlisle Castle was built during the reign of William II after driving the Scots out of Cumberland and claiming the area for England.
Standing on the site of a former Roman fort the construction of the castle began in 1093 to secure the northern border from Scottish invasion, in 1122 a stone castle was constructed on the site with a keep and city walls. The castle changed hands between England and Scotland many times as Scotland attempted to reclaim lands.
Henry VIII converted the castle for artillery purposes.
Mary Queen of Scots was imprisoned at the castle in 1568.

Until recently the castle was the administritive headquarters of the former Kings Own Border Regiment.
Today the castle is managed by English Heritage and is open to the public
