Artist's Description

Pastel on Colourfix pastel board 1.00m x 70cm 2011
Commission – SOLD

This commission is another one for my framer which I have been working on since before Christmas. Last year he asked me for a pastel painting for his wife as their special anniversary present for March 2011 – including their own pony, the little bay Welsh mare named Tina.

Other requirements for the painting were blue flowers, a palomino horse, an old bush hut & some other horses and some trees with early light.

It took a fair bit of thought & sifting through lots of photos so here is the result. If I was going to paint something for myself I would put in my fav types of horses. The photo of Tina was supplied by my framer, the palomino is one of my own horses, the old hut is from a photo I took at the pioneer village in Inverell, NSW. The black Friesian is none other than the gorgeous Wizzard, & the Gypsy mare & foal are no horses in particular but I wanted to balance the colours of the bay mare with the black Friesian.

I delivered the painting today on 1st March to the framer while his wife was there & when she saw the painting, not realising it was her own special one but recognising the pony we let the secret out which a few of us had kept quiet for the past 6 months. As you can imagine she was quite overwhelmed & burst into tears, not believing it.

I’ve also written a poem to go with her painting which she told me has got a magic feel to it.
Thanks for viewing, hope you like it as much as we do.

A horse as golden as the morn
trots proudly into sight,
Where bluebells greet the pastel dawn
all dancing in the light.

Past the old deserted shack
that stands so long forgotten,
A cabin on the lonely track,
the boards and roof now rotten.

A Gypsy mare and foal stand by
the little bay Welsh mare,
Tall eucalyptus trees do sigh -
leaves fall without a care.

A noble Friesian, black as night
here guards his precious herd,
His piebald colt with colours bright,
like morning’s magpie bird.

In Tina’s meadow, full of grace
and beauty – wild and proud,
A hidden, sheltered secret place,
It’s magic like a shroud.
