Artist's Description

Digital photo September 2007
Taken in my garden, flowering now in Spring.

The Protea family of plants come in many beautiful varieties & colours. This family (Proteaceae) go back about 95 million years to the time when, what are
now quite distinctive & separate countries were part of the great southern continent. As the land mass separated, so did the protea family.

Proteas are found native in Australia, Africa, Indo Malay & South America –
each one evolving differently on each continent with no genera or species in
common. The South African & Australian plants often look similar.

They can be grown in the garden or in a container. They are hardy, adaptable,
& are just about the perfect plant for nearly all Australian conditions. In nature they thrive in poor but well drained soils low in nutrients. They do not require feeding, unless grown in a tub.

The King Protea comes in red, pink & white colours & grow up to 1.5m high.
