Anatomy of Grey

Amsterdam from these windows of what is still called “de bank” is grey – not only the primary color of November, but the rest of the year as well.

Those great paintings – all huge blue skies and clouds – were they an attempt to capture and hold the unusual moment, to catch the preferred state, and not a reflection of a normal Dutch sky? Who would want a dismal grey fog of a painting, when that is their daily view?

Here in Buitenveldert the buildings are grey, squared mushrooms rising with obedient angularity from what used to be green space. Yellow building cranes provide some grateful temporary staccatto.

We had no summer, and now barrel towards the non-winter.
I am a sunny California plant, going crazy for lack of sun and color.
