Obsession

I would love you if I met you
And maybe think about you
When you weren’t there to look at
I would wonder how you kept
Your hair looking the way it did
And through trial and error I would
Copy it, look in the mirror
And find that it can never match yours

I would watch the way they look at you
Men who never once
Dared to even look at me
And wonder what was so special
About your beauty in comparison
To mine?
It was almost obsessive, the way
I constructed my persona around
The very thought that made you.

It would take the night alone
And that frantic look in the mirror
To scare me into recognition
I had painted on your face
My tears staining a stranger’s
Visage
