Waking Up

Everything was numb before that moment. It was as if consciousness was trapped between the last tendrils of darkness and the provocation of light slowly starting to shine past the horizon. All before this moment was held in a dream. Now however, the body tingles. Gradually it becomes aware of its surroundings. Mindful that just a few milliseconds before, it did not know where it was. There is a yielding kind of struggle, as it fights through the haze, trying to take control once again.

There is a soft murmur, a turn and then silence. Eyes flutter and close again. Lashes catch the first rays of the sun. A flutter again- and now the furrowing of a brow. A frown forms from the sleeping wrinkles at the side of the mouth. Creases form where there were none before. The nighttime had smoothed them out. Now the sunlight hints at each one, like an individual kiss.

Everything is blue at this moment. – The sky, the softness of the room and the shade under the covers. It’s as if stepping into another world; a world much more placid than the one before it. There are no ripples, no sudden shocks, just the smoothness of time, flowing into itself. At this moment, the body acquiesces, just as it had those few brief seconds before there was no more. Only now, the light whispers revival, and the body has no other choice but to accept.

A bird twitters in the distance. Then another one joins in. Soon the sounds become harmony, cutting into the silence not with force, but with fragility. The moment is slowly shattering, allowing the resonance of life to seep back into a dawning reality. Light bounces off the objects in the room, bounces off more light, reflecting and illuminating, creating and expanding what wasn’t there just hours before.

Everything is golden. And now the body rouses, feeling the honey tinted luminescence seep into its bones. It’s like a song, faint but still quite beautiful. And when the eyes finally open, the gold is there to greet them like a mother’s kiss. The pupils dilate, then contract. As if gazing into some other world and wanting to take it all in, only to realize that had been there before. A blink- and everything settles into awareness.
