Wishful

And if I were to write a poem for you tonight
Would it surpass all that I have done before?
Speak in this meaningless quietude
Of the existence, the rebirth of my vision?
Would it touch you, my words
Strike harmony within your soul?
Fill you as stars fill the never-ending sky?
Would it settle like dust
Stirred once by aged journeys?

And if I were to write these words tonight
Would the pieces suddenly come together
A mosaic, broken once before
By myriad encounters of love and loss
Hate and bliss, disregard and consummate mercy
The utter completeness of my humanity
Would you be afraid of what I have done?
Would you feel shame for me
At having lost my passion?

And if I were to write a poem tonight
Would you feel the bleakness of my world?
Taste the bitterness of my yearnings?
Would you remember the nights
When my pain was once your own?
Would you cry for me?
Mourn for who I once was?
Would be believe that even on the darkest night
As we both pray on the loneliest star
That I cry too?
