Dresses

There’s dresses in the closet that don’t fit you anymore
But you glance at them all the same
Like you could step across time and fit
Somewhere in between the sleeves and the pocket
Stitching yourself into the cotton threads
Stretched and made to keep you

They weren’t all too pretty for you like people said they were
I thought you looked just fine
Back then
Even if you were too young to realize
Nothing could hold you in like you wanted

I can see why you don’t want to let them go
They look new and smell like your mother’s clean hands
I think those memories
Keep you much better than the fabrics ever could though,
But that’s a thought I’ll keep to myself
