Mid-Rise

There were promises
Lined into the sand of early morning
Stretched alongside the rocks and fish
And jolting green of the seaweed,
Dark and unhindered.
No fear that they would be washed away
Whether by that intangible frequency
Of doubt,
Ceaseless and vaguely unaware.

When the tide rises
And slowly finds its decent
I can hear things folding, the inner
Workings of wind and water
Like levers pulling below the current
Below the sharpness of things surfaced
Soft and fluid,
Grabbing and calling
Hungrily clasping life and motion
Indenting the wet sand
Like fingers clawing at the earth
Reaching for the safety of dry land.

Our promises are always in search of something valid.
