Tightrope

Sometimes you find yourself
balancing on lines too weak
to carry your weight.
And you’re well aware of this
but you keep tiptoeing forward anyway,
because that silly child-like part of you
still believes that you can fly.
It still believes that when the lines let go,
you’ll carry yourself up.

But it doesn’t work that way.

And yet…
still you keep walking along don’t you?
Because you’re so close
and you just couldn’t see yourself turning back.
Not now, not after you heard the
tearing of rope fibers in the back of you.
Maybe it’s the thrill of being so close to the other side,
closer still to death.
Maybe it’s the only way you’re able to feel,
or fear anymore.
So you tiptoe along, one foot in front of the other,
towards certain death.
Because this line can’t carry your weight.
But you’re well aware of this,
and strangely, the thought of dying
doesn’t make you move any faster.
