Notched Up.

We all have these notches on our bodies. They tell us how far we’ve come and just how much farther we have to go. And when we talk and smile at those strangers, we cautiously turn to those notches marked on us, in us and figure out how much farther down we’ll let the conversation go.

Not too far though.

Maybe five notches down from our eyes.

The weather, sports, television, a joke, our destination for the day. Even those can be lies.

One notch lower and you’re reaching uncharted territory. Those carved lines that are moldy from disuse. You don’t speak of those. Of course you can always lie, but when you’re taken by surprise you’re forced into the truth. And that’s not a place you want to go.

So five notches are enough. No lower.
