Artist's Description

The town of Salem NC was one of the earlier settlements in the US. Settled by the Moravians as religious community in the early 18th century, it evolved quickly into one of the most successful economic centers of early America. The early settlers prided themselves in their architecture and craftsmanship which is evident in the structures that still survive there today. You can experience the culture as it was in the 1700’s when you meet and talk to people who dress in the style of the time and demonstrate skills of the craftsmen as it was originally performed. This is a window of the original Gunsmith shop of Timothy Vogler. It is described as the most authentic gunsmith shop in America. Skilled gunsmiths continue to produce custom muzzle loading rifles in the shop everyday. I’m not much into guns, but it is an amazing process to watch. The reflection in the windows is of a 250 year old home across the street that is currently a private residence. The distortion in the glass intrigues me because it denotes that it is probably the original panes that were used when the building was first constructed.
