Atmosphere

A storm flows above the calm sea
I watch from the beach
As the sunlight fails before my eyes
Blue water below the black sky
No light shines through
I wait for the clouds to open up
This air is charged with electricity
Stirring a feeling
That is complicated in its simplicity
The wind carries with it a scent
A whiff of vanilla
As the waves crash bending the sea
A bird overhead is blown off course
Silently cast aside
By the relentless nature of the storm
I feel dry sand beneath my toes
Grains of dust
That scatter to the wind’s beckoning
The first drops touch land
Then it pours
The storm’s reach extended
Without turning I know she is there
Behind me
Her golden hair whipping
I stand with a ghost
In the rain
Our black canopy is complete
But she is only there not really here
Gone by the time
That the sky begins to clear
Here I spend time with my past
My mind’s eye
Everyone that was and never will be again
A few precious moments of haunting atmosphere
Where I can bend
Past to present
