A new day begins much the same as any other and soon it is hard to differentiate it from another. You move from one moment to the next in the flow of life without any pause or thought. Flowing in the seas of time, flowing in the seas of a World that seems to no longer ebb and flow but is always a surging wave on the edge of crashing. On the edge, I search for calm, a ship to let me forget the burdens of this daily life. A fairy tale that seems always just out of reach and slips mercilessly away as another day becomes another surging wave.

I have driven past a place that has evoked in me hope of a fairy tale, given me the hope of another World that resides right here within this one. If only a dreamy glance from the side of the road is all I am allowed it has given me a breath of fresh mountain air. It has revealed a hint of beauty and majesty that must reside within its’ snow driven white walls and candy apple red roof. My imagination fills in for me what I cannot know about what lies within those walls. A true beauty, a fairy tale, a ship that promises calm seas.

The Mount Washington Hotel is a remarkable structure that immediately grabs your attention and holds it until you fall into a trance. The beauty before your eyes seems to defy reality and yet there it is, even after you blink, even after you pinch yourself, the beauty still stands tall and proud. History, a living history, invites you to come closer.

Then reality and the wave of life sweeps you away and the fairy tale must wait for another day. The hustle and bustle of life simply takes you away and keeps you in the surging waves. Then one day you are pulled from the twisting waves and given a chance to glimpse inside the walls of that fairy tale hotel.

As you drive and head towards the hotel the magic has already begun to capture you and take hold of your World. Mile by mile the landscapes slowly evolves from the storm you call a life to a slower paced dream. Businesses and city streets filled with cars and people slowly change to small towns with children playing ball and citizens sitting on porches before your weary eyes. The Small towns disappear and a camp appears here or maybe there but soon they disappear as well. The small towns have become mountains with waterfalls splashing down from the tops. The air is crisp and fresh as you begin to feel more alive, more alert as the waves are now but small swells that are gently pushing you to the a place were fairy tales are real.

As you turn into the portico at Mount Washington Hotel it is clear you are somewhere that is a page out of history, a piece of yesterday in a World that only seems to see tomorrow. The valet attendants and bellboys are eager to help and start your experience off with a pleasant “welcome home” atmosphere. The doors are opened to welcome you into yesterday. As you step thru this magical threshold you are given a sensory overload with a large open lobby that seems to go on forever and yet have so many intimate places to enjoy a conversation or read a book or maybe sit by a fire to name just a few. Checking in is easy and very pleasant and soon you are off to your room. First though the elevator door opens and you are greeted by another smiling face that will happily take you to your desired floor. The bellboy bounces to a drummer that seems to be playing happy sounds for his ears and it is quite catching. A sense of happiness and calm just resides within the hallowed walls as you move around the hotel. In your room you notice the bed that seems to just reach for you and promises to lay you gently in its fluff to begin a refreshing sleep. The choice is yours as you look out of the window and realize the seas are calm now, almost like a mirror with the “real” World’s encompassing waves nowhere to be found. Views of mystical mountains abound from each room and even a forest that dares you to believe that Robin Hood and his merry men reside within them. You could look upon the lands before your eyes for hours as if it were a painting that continued to evolve before your eyes and just or you. And yet so much more awaits you with this cherish respite from reality that you are drawn from the sanctuary of your room to the lobby. Is it time for tea and cookies or maybe hot chocolate? Perhaps a game of scrabble? Either or it is simply up to you as this is your journey, your fairy tale to write.

The grand dinning room will please you in every sense from soft sounds to mouth watering smells to stimulating views. The food is just how you always dreamed it would be yet somehow it is even better. It melts in your mouth with each bite or maybe each nibble as you try to savoir the explosion of tastes within your mouth. Breakfast, lunch, or dinner all bring the same delightful dinning experience. Your cup never runneth dry and you never need to ask for more.

The grounds around the hotel are to be enjoyed to the utmost at your leisure as well. A walk, a carriage ride, or something to suit the season awaits your whims. Dream it and it is likely to be found somewhere in fantasy land here at the resort. If you chose to explore then you will never be at a loss for entertainment or stimulation. If your idea is to be lost then that is available too in the many places within the walls or verandas that all seem to exude a different atmosphere and yet coexist perfectly.

The Mount Washington Hotel was called “the Titantic of land” by a guest and it fits well. The hotel is grand in appearance from the outside and within. It has charm, character, and ambiance in abundance that fills you with happiness at each turn. The friendly staff only enhances your experience and you truly feel like they care that you are enjoying your stay. It is as if the hands of time where turned back and the Titantic didn’t sink but ran aground and became this lovely hotel. One thing that you are sure to feel is that everyday life seems far away from here. The surging waves of life feel like calm seas aboard this “Titantic of the Land”.
