Purple Invitation

I remember clearly the way you held your head high -
walking down the street with a newspaper under your arm
your polished shoes glistening in the sun

On the invisible purple cross, I waited for you

Weekends you’d run around the backyard -
playing football with the boy’s
my turn would come to have a kick

I was never very good and sulked off to live in my tree house
I wanted to invite you in

Yesterday, I tried to invite you in
But your head is held low
your shoes barely tied

On the invisible purple cross; I am still here

I shall never forget you leaving -
struggling to get into a cab
my heart sunk lower than I have ever felt it go
in fact, it went to a place that should not be known

I wanted to drag you out –
turn the clock back in time
to once again see your head held high
and send you a purple engraved invitation

Dear Dad,

Would you like to come live with me in my tree house?
I’ve cups of tea and your favourite shortbread
and there is so much I want to talk about; to know.

Love your daughter
Lisa
