Bluebird

I went home today
in search of the bluebird
toting a bag of cleaned curtains
a small act of helpfulness
for my precious mother

She greeted me at the back door
the front is never used
like unmentionable conversations
they are seen but never heard

Thank you father; dearest

She cried tears of gratitude
I wondered if she saw
my heels dig in deeper
the muting out of hopeful tones
a thumping of my bloody chest

Stealthily hatching jailbreak plans
as voices chant
free the bluebird

I felt my father’s invisible touch
silencing my bluebird pilgrimage
holding her to ransom
with forces I can’t see

Yet within her wings
the ones he has clipped
I rest awhile
and listen to her whispers

Today I went home
and found the bluebird
she is always there
