I Stopped

I was walking in
he was walking out
and she was on the footpath
crying in between screaming
at he that walked out
she had been in
three times today
he carried a bottle of red
she had a cask in a plastic bag

I stopped.

She screamed out
‘but I don’t want to drink anymore’
he walked past her
I walked out with my bag
as she slid down the wall
stretching her hand to me
screaming
‘but love, I don’t want to drink anymore
they took my kids’

I stopped.

My compassion was high
and my fear slid up and over the wall
I asked, is there anything I can do?
‘they took my kids because I drink’
her eyes darted -
falling upon the plastic bag
drawing it to her bosom
she rocked the cask
and sang it a lullaby

‘you go love, I’ll be alright’
Can I call someone?
‘no you go love’

my fear slid through my head
wrapping tightly around my ankles

I stopped.

I Stopped
