For my Mother

Mum, I wrote for you
just recently
As I thought you should know

The many lessons you taught
came in different guises
The ones you intended
and those you thought were a secret

Do you know, Mum
that all my childhood friends
begged me to take them home to you
for a hug and your evanescent smile
that they’d recall as the school bell rang

Incessantly asking
does your mum really bake your lunch box treats
How come she comes to watch you -
play netball, singing from the sidelines
Go Lisa and then cheers all others with
the same passion?

Do you know, Mum
that I saw your heart break
But I was a teenager and caught in
a murky pool – that still tries to drown me

Did you fuss and ask anything of anybody
Oh gods – NO – you did not
You smiled and wished well of all and then some
Never letting your lips pass a bad word

Now you sit there in the house
that is still my home
you tell me so
holding onto my father
as he slips further from sight

As you did your own mother
the grandmother
that warned me away from you
her words
“we can’t both have her”

I simply want you to know
from a daughters heart
I saw and felt much more
Than I’ve told you

And furthermore
prepare yourself, Mum
I’m about to tell you, about

My love
My tears
My shame
My pride

And my indebtedness – that you are my Mother…..

For my Mother
