Artist's Description

PRECURSOR OF MODERN CHEMISTRY. “Alchemy”: From the Arabian “al-kimia”, Egyptian preparation of elixir. “Kimia” from Coptic “khem” Nile soil/primordial matter. Elements of earth, fire, water, air. Also practiced in Mesopotamia, Persia, India, China, Greece, Rome. See Isaac Newton, Roger Bacon, Thomas Aquinas, Parmigianino. Matter transmutation goal impacts nanotech, AI, nuclear particle acceleration.

  • Zinc (Zn): Use to make “philosopher’s oxide”, sometimes called “nix alba” or white snow.
  • Potassium (K): Used as potash, carbonate.
  • Tin (Sn): Interchangeable with Jupiter symbol.
  • Gold (Au): Symbol of the sun. Physical, mental, spiritual perfection.
  • Silver (Ag): Or argentum, interchangeable with moon symbol.
  • Phosphorus (P): Glowed as compound, connected to the spirit, burned spontaneously in air. Indicated planet Venus.
  • Lead (Pb): Symbol for the planet Saturn.
  • Bismuth (Bi): “White mass” from German “weisse masse.” Often confused with lead, tin, antimony, silver. Used in early alloys, e.g. printing presses of 1450s.
