Summer's Sentence

Clouds pirouetted
Across the summer sky
Capturing my attention
Where I hovered
In a pool
Of chlorinated relaxation.
As the wind exhaled,
Your bright blue air chair flew
Across the water.
Once filled with laughter,
This day it bounced
Off the rubber wall
Empty
Of joy,
childlike play,
and effortless giggles.
Time had moved on
Leaving me- and this lounger-
To function
Without ice-filled drinks,
carefree conversations,
or a hand to hold.
Loneliness personified-
The true sound of one hand clapping-
A soliloquy of salty tears
For company
In the heat
Of a summer afternoon.
Love
In its purest form
Squashed
Into a mere memory
Of what breathed
Once upon a beach-
Where sandy sets
Of footprints frolicked
With the seagulls
And
The expanse of the ocean
Promised forever.
Eternity
Must have skirted
A different wave than I,
Carrying you
In a direction
I was unable to follow.
Though I still toss,
And turn,
And search,
This afternoon
I’m floating,
Like your empty pool chair,
Wherever the warm winds whisper
Into the ides of another June…
Alone…
…And my soul bleeds.
