Artist's Description

What an extrovert, this glorious vertical ‘cabbage’
A green and gold extravaganza
Probably not edible but definitely a show pony
A photo opportunity worth stopping for
In a flurry of gravel and dust …

Cabbage Gloriana – featured in ‘Country Gardens – Come Grow With Us’ – is more correctly known as the Royal Hakea (Hakea Victoria); I believe that such a stunning example of flora so obviously behaving like an extrovert deserves both its original botanical names – and anything of a more whimsical nature, depending on your personal interpretation. A ‘glorious cabbage’ is exactly what I think of when reflecting on this plant spotted whilst travelling several years ago.

1,800 plant species – 20% of Western Australia’s total – are found in the Fitzgerald River National Park, a truly unique biodiversity hotspot. This south coast national park, covering over 330,000 hectares, is the home of sixty-five plants that are not found in any other place on earth; 2,000 wildflower species are also to be admired all year round, but especially in spring.

It is a hot and dry summer’s day, however, when we negotiate the dusty, ridgy dirt road through the national park; our motorhome is not enjoying the journey as much as the passengers. I insist on a quick photo stop when this little beauty makes its appearance on the side of the road; the overtaxed suspension gradually stops reverberating, as I capture the image on file …

Perhaps the road has been upgraded since then!
