Ode to Miss Spider in My Bathroom Window

“Ode to Miss Spider in My Bathroom Window”
Many weeks went by, you never missed a fly,
Your web was a tunnel, thick and sleek,
If I disturbed it at all, you ran away meek.

I cleaned the other windows, after removing the screens,
Time went by, watching your insect carnage scenes,
Still couldn’t bring myself to destroy you or your nest.

Yesterday, however, I decided it best,
to clean out the window, and put the matter to rest.

I got out the vacuum, attachments and all,
Gently opened the window, saw your web fall,
You scrambled to the ledge,
just over the edge,

I sucked up the web with the long hose,
And still couldn’t bear to vacuum your toes,
I filled my lungs with air, and though you were tough,
You flew off the ledge with a single puff.

Though sad this may seem,
(Or a very bad dream),
You’ll now live your life in Nature’s great care,
And my window is clean, and really quite bare.

Artist's Description

I had a tunnel spider residing in my bathroom window, between the window and the screen. After weeks of watching her capture and wrap her victims, it was time for the screen to come down. I didn’t have the heart to squash such an amazing creature, so I blew her out the window onto the ground below.
